This week, leaders of the University System of Georgia outlined a proposal that would eliminate Georgia's 4-H program (94 4-H agents would lose their positions) and cut the total number of County Extension offices in half (a total loss of 169 positions including agents, secretaries and program assistants). In addition, the plan calls for the closure of all five of the 4-H camps. If this cut stands, Extension will take cuts totaling 51% between FY09 and FY 11. The long term costs of losing these programs and offices would be far greater than anything we might save in the short term.
