  • Waycross was first settled around 1820. Known as a railroad stop and called "Old Nine" or "Number Nine", it acquired the name "Pendleton" sometime later. It was renamed "Tebeauville" in 1857 and incorporated as "Tebeauville" in 1866. Waycross was designated county seat in 1873 and named "Way Cross" in 1874 because it was at the intersection of three railroads plus several dirt roads.

    Philosophy and Mission
The Ware County Recreation and Parks Department’s mission is to provide quality, diversity, and wholesome parks and recreation services to help meet the needs of the citizens of Ware County.

The Ware County Recreation and Parks Department is a public recreation department funded by the Ware County Commission. A seven member Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee provides guidance for the Department. The Board members are approved by the Ware County Commissioners. The Board is made up of citizens throughout Ware County, each having a common interest in providing the best Parks and Recreation services possible to the citizens of Ware County.

The Athletics Division offers activities for both youth and adults. Youth programs include: baseball, softball, football, basketball, cheerleading, golf, and skill camps. Adult programs include softball and basketball. *For information on league standings, youth and adult game schedules, teams and coaches, go to www.leaguelineup.com/warecounty.

The Ware County Participation Philosophy is as follows: Participation policies in all youth sports programs assume that each child who registers to play will actually play in all scheduled games. The Recreation Department’s philosophy is that winning is secondary to learning and experiencing the excitement that comes with playing the game.

The community Recreation Division offers programs involving youth and adults. Community Recreation includes after school programs, Summer Day Camp, Spring Day Camp, Special Olympics, Senior Citizens’ Day, Swimming and Walking Clubs, and Supervised Free Play and Supervised Computer Access at the Memorial Park Facility.

Our Services should ensure a better quality of life by:
    1. Unifying the cooperative spirit within the county.
    2. Communicating the opportunities and advantages of parks and recreation services.
    3. Being geographically accessible.
    4. Being economically feasible.
    5. Networking with community agencies and other recreation providers and the school system.

The Ware County Recreation and Parks Department’s twelve full-time employees have the responsibility of supervising all programs, operations and maintenance of Trembling Earth Youth Complex, Trembling Earth Adult Complex, Grove Ave. Recreation Main Office and Basketball Gymnasium, Meeting Rooms and Baseball Fields, Bailey St. Park, Memorial Park, Erin Johnson Softball Complex, and the City Auditorium.
